Description of Book:
Ifyou like modeling the prototype but you have limited space, this bookis for you. It covers basics of getting a lot of track into a smallarea through the use of loops and switches. Details how you can applythese ideas to prototype modeling, using several short lines asexamples.
Book includes nearly 150 different train layoutsspecially designed for sectional track. They cover every size spaceavailable and varying degrees of complexity. As a general rule, manyof them are more complex than the track plans found in the variousmanufacturers catalogs. All of the track designs contained may bebuilt using the track that came with your train set, REGARDLESS OFMAKE OR GAUGE, although certain modifications may be necessary.
Ingoing over the contents of this book, study all the plans, regardlessof gauge. Ask yourself if you like the idea of the layout. Then askif that layout would fit the space you have available. Alwaysremember that any layout can be enlarged.
The layouts in thisbook are more complicated than mere ovals but in most cases you canstill add straight sections to make the layout longer or wider. Eachstraight section added will increase the size of the layout by fourto ten inches, depending on the gauge and make of yourtrack.
Sometimes you can reduce the size of the layout byomitting straight sections but mostof these layouts have been designed to fit in minimum space. Ifyou do drop out a straight section, you may not have room for all theswitches on the other side, or grades may become too steep if it is atwo-level layout. If you do change the size or gauge of the layout,it is necessary to check the re-design.
Lacking the aboveknow-how, it is perhaps easier to build the problem sections of thelayout on the floor, using actual track and switches.
You caneven change from an eight-pieces-per-circle type track, such asLionel O or Marlin 12 radius HO, to the twelve-pieces-per-circletype track, such as Snap-Track, Marlin 15 in. and 18 in. radii, Trix,or Rapido, but you must then allow for the differences in curveangle. For this reason, it is necessary to redesign certain layoutswhen you switch from one type of track to another. How extensivethese changes will be will depend on the size and complexity of yourlayout.
The layouts in this book are also suitable for usewith other track lines not specifically covered, including Rokal,Triang, Lehmann, Aurora, Rivarossi, Fleischmann, Mars, and major Nand HO Gauge lines using sectional track. They are also suitable foruse by collectors using discontinued track lines such as Ives,American Flyer O and Wide Gauge, Lionel Standard, and early Europeanlarge gauge systems.
This is a trackbook for beginners and others who prefer sectional track,
whether inN, HO, TT, S or O Scale.
Most layouts are designed for O andS scales using sectional track and table-top space.
Diagrams alsoshow how track can be arranged for two train operation.
