Offered is the last of 6 wooden constructed model box girder bridgessuitable for either O Gauge or G Scale. 5 have previously sold. It comes as several sections, eachsection being about 30cm (1ft) in length, comprising of 2 ends made of 4 sections andthen 7 centre sections giving a total length of just over 3 metres (11ft).
The history of these is quite interesting as theyoriginally formed a model box girder bridge for the Royal Engineers to practicewith and were made during or just after the last war so they are at least 70-80years old. All the various sections were originally boxed in two large wooden trunks, I haveselected those sections which would make a suitable model bridge for either OGauge or G Scale. There is a photo of a truck on the bridge sections of bothscales to give a sense of size. The sections are not large enough for eitherscale to sit within the girder sections so by inverting the model bridge itallows the track to run along the top with the box girder bridge below thetrack see photos.The sections are made of hornbeam hard wood with what seems to beply end sections. Due to their age and long storage, there is evidence ofhistoric woodworm on most of the sections, albeit slight, and it is strongly recommendedthat each section is treated before use. Each of the sections offered waschecked for woodworm and given a good pull, push and twist to ensure stability. One of the first sloping sections on this offer has a section of ply missing – see photo 4 – This had crumbled due to woodworm, however the hardwood behind appears stable, although there is historic woodworm activity, and it does not reduce the overall appearence of the complete bridge. With the sloping end sections joining the centre boxsections you can make up a single track straight bridge up to 10ft in length. The sections do not fix together, only butt up to each other with a centre lug so you will need to either glue, screw or bolt sections together.
