This is an O gauge finescale Grange class loco converted from a metal Lionel “Hogwarts Express” Hall class, fitted with TWO DCC decoders. There’s quite a bit of explaining to do here, so PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

The original body has been altered to include the characteristic Grange /Manor “step” over the cylinders, as well as smaller wheels and replacement coupling rods etc.

The puffing smoke on these models relies on a cam on one driving axle. This cam has been altered to give two chuffs per revolution, not one. Of course it should be four, and as the speed picks up they merge together anyway. The smoke unit makes thick white smoke, not spitty globules like Seuthe!

Now, the decoders… The motor runs off a Zen Buddha large scale decoder, which also does the smoke and firebox flicker. The sound comes from a Zimo mx645 (which doesn’t have the power to run motor and smoke as well) with Youchoos sound and twin cube speakers. F1 triggers the sound and smoke together, if you just want smoke without sound it’s F0. Because it doesn’t drive the motor it won’t “chuff”, but you get steam hiss, whistles, and all the rest – plus of course coal shovelling tied in with the firebox glow. It runs well, with pickups on two of the tender axles and jumper wires going into a socket under the tender chassis.

Details… The cab is fully done out with hand painted crew, there’s real coal in the tender, Fox Transfers name and number plates, sprung buffers, screw link couplings and many other small added details.

So, to sum up, it’s not a perfect museum quality model, but it runs well, I think it looks great, it sounds nice, and the smoke puffs. These models are strongly made and very easy to work on. If you wanted it without the sound decoder then feel free to make an offer on that basis as I can remove it. Remember that with both decoders in the CVs can’t be changed without isolating one – at least not on my controller.

By all means ask questions, I’ll do my best to answer them, and please study the photos carefully too (some of them are taken on my layout, but obviously nothing except the loco is included in the sale).Post to the UK only please, but will be appropriately insured, hence the cost – remember this is a large, heavy loco. Thank you for taking the trouble to read all the way to the end, I know I’ve gone on a bit!
