This is a newlimited edition Minitrix 12312 BR 18.525Rheingold Locomotive & Tender OVP. This locomotiveand tender combination is in superb condition, having never been used.

Model: Era II (1925 to 1945)Thislocomotive has the new, impressive Trix technology. Locomotive and tender madeof die-cast metal. Powerful can motor with a bell-shaped armature and aflywheel. Motor and drive gear in the boiler. Digital connector in the tender.Close coupling between the locomotive and tender. The valve gear and the wheeltreads are dark nickel plated. The locomotive comes with brass colored boilerbands, as well as a red-white-red band on the smoke stack signs that alocomotive was for the exclusive use of the Rheingold.3 axles powered through side rods, 2 traction tires. Length over the buffers134 mm (5-1/4 in). The class S3/6 locomotives were particularly successful designs. These units provedthemselves both in Bavaria and also in important, long distance passengerservice beyond the borders of Germany. The German State Railroad Companyordered additional units in this class between 1923 and 1930 from Maffei andHenschel, based on the good experience with this locomotive, later designatedas the class 18.4. A special, visible feature on this second series was the factthat the front of the engineer’s cab no longer had a pointed shape to lessenwind resistance; the engineer’s cab now was simply straight across the front.Together with the longer look of the boiler, it now gave these locomotives atotally different appearance. In addition, the power output was raised slightlyas the result of different modifications. This now made the class 18.5 (thenext class designation for these units) locomotives the ideal motive power forimportant, long distance passenger service. The class 18.5 was the preferredmotive power in particular for the “Rheingold”. The locomotives usedin this service were given a red-white-red band around the smoke stack. Thebrass boiler bands were always kept highly polished, and were further proof ofthe demands placed on the appearance of the Rheingold flagship trains. The lastclass 18.5 locomotive was not retired until 1966. Several museum locomotivesremain preserved, among them an operational unit at the Bavarian RailroadMuseum in Nrdlingen.
