Observation Coach Car #9500 comes from a 4-car set, Southern Pacific 1: Smoothside Passenger Car (Set A) #106-1006. Kato’s original prototype is an 85 Pullman Standard 2-1-1 Observation Lounge car. These observation cars were built with 2 double-bedrooms, 1 drawing room, 1 “compartment” (larger than a bedroom), a 38-seat lounge, as well as a barbershop and shower. Typically the last car of the train, the “boat tail” observation buffet lounge was reserved for the exclusive use of first-class passengers.

In the late 1930s-1940s style-conscious age of streamlining, the observation car’s appearance experienced a radical change. The observation end could be molded into many shapes. The basic “bullet”, or “swallowtail”, or rounded-end U-shape configuration (as pictured in this listing) became the most popular, and signified the ultimate in train travel. Soon, every railroad was ordering them.

The Pullman Standard Company constructed the greatest number of lightweight streamlined U-shaped Observations more than 170 between the 1930s and mid 1950s. In the end, Pullman converted many lightweight streamlined observations to straight coaches as their usefulness as observations waned due to the increased costs of switching cars, and proved to be limiting because they could only be operated as the last car in a passenger train.

Begun on May 8, 1910, the Lark was an overnight passenger train of the Southern Pacific Railroad on the 470-mile run between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Lark ran along the same route as the Coast Daylight: 75 was the northbound train, while 76 ran southbound. The Lark was to overnight travelers what the Daylights were to day travelers in the San FranciscoLos Angeles market: safe, reliable, deluxe transportation. The Lark was the only streamlined all-room sleeping car train to operate entirely within a single state and the only all-room train operating strictly on the West Coast.
