MTK AMU 208
Unbuilt OO Kit for Class 307 4 car 6.25/25kV AC EMU, used mainly between Liverpool Street and Southend Victoria, though after withdrawal from the GE a few units ended their lives working between Leeds and Doncaster
This kit was designed to build a Class 307 after conversion from 1500 DC to 6.25/25 kV AC (when the pantograph and brake van moved from the motor coach to the driving trailer). When these units were refurbished the first class moved to the other driver trailer but the basic layout didn’t change: the unit became gangwayed within the unit and the middle door (of three) in the first class compartment was removed and replaced by a fixed window, so it would be possible to use the kit to make up a refurbished set.
MTK kits were basic kits lacking motor, wheels and interior. Neither are they for the faint hearted or the novice and required a considerable amount of modelling skill to get the best results, probably best described as “better than scratchbuilding – but only just!”
The kit includes aluminium bodyshells and floors, white metal cabs, carriage ends and a moulding for where the roof meets the pantograph well, bogie outer frames and a bag of white metal bits. The kit is believed complete apart from the bogie inner frames which were out of stock when the kit was put together (!!! – I’ve included the form to send off but it won’t do you any good as MTK are long gone), with basic instructions, but this isn’t guaranteed. The photographs show all the parts that are included.
