‘Modelling Railways Illustrated’ was published by the Irwell Press in the late 1990s. It represented something quite different when it was published, being edited – and largely written by – Iain Rice. For anyone needing to understand the basic principles of the hobby, this is about as good as it gets. At the time they were first published, I bought every issue, and have kept them until now for their solid good sense. There was a falling out between Rice and Irwell over the commissioning of articles, and sadly the later issues, edited by Jim Woods, were not as good, although still maintaining the Rice format and features.
The critical thing – and why these have not gone for recycling – is that re-reading the issues as I type the entries I realise what a fundamentally excellent job Rice did with them, and it is a great shame that he wasn’t allowed to continue. Theses deserve a second innings!
This particular issue is ‘full on’ Rice and contains articles on:
