So, what do the German A, B, Pw and such letters mean? The system of German railway wagon classes (Wagengattungen) was introduced in Germany in 1902 and 1905 by the Prussian state railways based on their system of norms, and was soon taken up by the other state railways (Lnderbahnen). On the formation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the system became mandatory across the whole of Germany. Here are a few definitions that help distinguish these cars:

  S = Special Passenger Coach
  A = First Class Passenger CoachAB = First and Second Class Passenger Coach
  B = Second Class Passenger Coach
  e = Electric train heating (elektrischer Zugheizung)
  Pw = Packwagen (Luggage Car)
  = Coach with corridor, gangway, and bellows for express trains coaches
  4 = Number of axels per coach
  38/52 = Year the coach was built / Year the coach was or rebuilt
  N 11 = First class identification
  N 14 = First & Second class (combined) identification
  N 17 = Second class (combined) identification
  Ffm = coachs home or maintenance station is Frankfurt, Germany
  Kar = coachs home or maintenance station is Karlsruhe, Germany
  Ksl = coachs home or maintenance station is Kassel, Germany
