Hornby R332 Class 253 HST I-C 125 train pack + 3 coaches, EXC working condition
BR’s decision to replace its mainline diesel traction in the early 1970s led to the introduction of the InterCity 125 high speed diesel train. Designated class 43 under TOPS, a total of 197 power cars were built by BREL over the period 1975-82. Having initially been designated class 253, the power cars were paired and numbered in the series 253 XXX, although all cars were also individually numbered in the series 43XXX. Power car 43010 was built at Crewe in 1976 and formed a pair (no.253 005) with 43011 (itself scrapped after the 1999 Ladbroke Grove rail crash). 43010 is still in service on the Great Western Railway, aged 40 years, and one of the class which retains the mantle of fastest diesel locomotive in the world.
Hornby produced their first paired models of the class 43 as R069/R070 in 1978, going on to produce many differently liveried/numbered versions over the years. This particular listed item was produced in the period 1980-84 as a 3-car train pack R332, forming the train 253 005 and including 43010 (R370) along with 43011 (R371) plus one Mark III coach, to which I have added 3 more coaches to form a more realistic train. The loco is powered by a Ringfield motor and has directional head lights, as does the dummy car. To confirm, this lot comprises…

(ii) R371: HST dummy car no.43011
(iii) 2 x R425: BR Inter-City Mark III coach, open first (photo 7)
(iv) 2 x R426: BR Inter-City Mark III coach, open second (photo 8)
All items are supplied unboxed and the power car is not DCC-ready. I have cleaned the wheels and lubricated the power bogie as appropriate: upon track testing the power car runs strongly in both directions and at all speeds. The directional lights on both the power and the dummy car work, although those on the latter are temperamental and require cleaning of pick-ups and other electrical connections. Cosmetically, other than slight marks on the underbelly of the power car cab (photo 12) all items are in excellent condition with minimal sign of previous use. All couplings are present.
