Eighty-two Class 43 High Speed Train Power Cars were built between 1976 and 1982 and they provided the motive force to pull trains made up of Mark 3 coaches on most of British Rail’s premier Intercity services. So successful was the design that it was an HST that broke the world speed record for diesel when in 1973 the train reached a speed of 143mph (230kph) between Northallerton and Thirsk in Yorkshire.
The HST in this set is part of the Porterbrook fleet, one of three leasing companies (ROSCO’s), formed in 1994 as part of the government’s restructuring of British Rail.
