Heljan O Gauge BR Green Class 47 for spares / repairs. It looks like it has received a mild light weathering wash in the past. It is perhaps Ideal for detailing with the MMP kit or maybe a Class 57 conversion?
The body is currently sitting loose on the chassis pending repairs. The final drive gears had failed on this when I acquired it several years ago (as they done on every Heljan 47 I have owned) and none of the directional lighting was working. It was therefore dismantled for re-wiring and conversion to DCC Sound, fitting MMP detailing etc (it was going to have the early pre-1965 radiator grille fitted) and general refurbishment and upgrading.
Unfortunately, due to time constraints it has been in storage in its current condition since I acquired it. As I have come to realise that I have too many other things on the go, it is time it found a new custodian. What needs doing from memory is as follows:
1) Source and replace the final drive gears, (available from Howes of Oxford for circa 1.30 each – requires 4 and maybe an hour to fit). Not a difficult job but one at the end of a long list of other tasks for me. Both motors rotate, pick up current collection is fine and even the roof fan works(!) although noisy.
2) Replace the missing roof grilles with spares, fabricated ones or proprietary improved ones. Unfortunately I am unable to locate the original grille slats that were removed, so alternatives will have to be sourced elsewhere. The body therefore comes as pictured with an empty void where the grille should be. The grille frame is however included and screwed in place. In addition to MMP Serck / original grille conversions, I believe there are other etched kits by PRMRP/ MM1 etc, but would be just as easy to fabricate the serck grille slats from brass strip. A class 57 conversion would also utilise an alternative grille.
3) Re-wire for DCC or original PCB. As none of the directional / headcode lighting was working, I was going to wire LEDs directly to the sound decoder. Should you wish to use it for DC, you will need to wire these to the PCB plugs included as pictured for spares (sourced from a couple of other DCC converted locos). If you are wiring for DCC the original wiring and lighting all needs stripping out anyway as Heljan O gauge locos are far from DCC ready – so this bit is already done for you!
4) refit cab interior included (seat will need to be re-attached), the head code glazing is still in place. Obtain 3 spare body screws and refit body (it was only attached with one screw when I acquired it, which is included).
There may be other bits and pieces I have overlooked. It’s a project and sold for spares or repairs, think of it as a 95% complete kit requiring sourcing a few minor bits. Alternatively if you have the MMP detailing kit, this would be an ideal base for detailing and conversion which is why I had put it to one side on the ‘get round to it list’.
As pictured there are some copies of headcode destination panels included, a replacement headcode backing panel and various wires and correct PCB plugs should you wish to reinstate it to analogue DC control.
It also comes with original box complete with foam inserts. The box is in very good condition but the lid has a few storage marks and scuffs as they always seem to.
No reserve and auction runs to end. Good luck if you decide to bid!
