Up for bid is a Great Western Railway Brass HO “55xx” class 2-6-2T Steam Locomotive #5572 made in Korea for RTR. The original box, papers and packing are with the engine. This model has been in my collection since I bought it new in London in the 1980’s. It has been stored in its box for over 20 years. It has had very little run time. I presently have no way to test this engine, so it is being sold as is. Please see the pictures as they are part of the description.
These locomotives were designed by G. J. Churchward CME of the GWR in the years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War. When delivered they wore the 1907 livery of Tea-Leaf green boilers and side tanks with black wheels and underframes and they were fully lined and bore the lettering Great (crest) Western with the company garter crest in the middle. They survived the “Grouping” in 1923 but lost their elegance with the plain green livery this engine bears between the wars. Many lasted through the Second World War and went on to serve the British Railways. Oddly it was under BR that some engines in the class were spruced up in lining again! They soldiered on until the ultimate demise of British steam in 1968. Several have been preserved on tourist lines and work to this day. This engine is painted in such a way that it may be backdated by the addition of lining and the crest.
In service these engines were intended for mixed traffic work on branch lines as well as on the main. They have a attractive appearance, elegant when lined out and utilitarian in their plain green. If you want an interesting locomotive on your layout, here is a beautiful jewel to enjoy.
