Having difficulty painting a distant signal arm, and getting a crisp line for the black chevron? Here are set of waterslide transfers to customise your MSE/Wizard brass signal arms etches in 2mm scale (N gauge).
They are invaluable for anyone having difficulty creating the chevrons on distant signals, as MSE have no guide etches.

Check out how other modellers have used the 4mm transfers in the Signal Gallery. Now BR, LMS, Southern and LNER modellers are spared the heartache with these handy transfers designed for the well-known and popular MSE brass frets.
The transfers use photographs of actual arms, so include a wealth of additional detail.
The transfers are the waterslide type, and need a degree of care when being cut from the sheet. A product such as Decalfix is recommended for a permanent application.
MSE etches do not feature the bolts that secure the arm, and as these transfers are created from actual photos, the bolt heads are reproduced. A selection of weathered arms are provided, together with ‘clean’ arms. The LMS in Derby introduced Upper Quadrant signals from 1926 (it took a little longer for them to be introduced across the whoe of LMS). These early signals were corrugated and the design was shared with the LNER and Southern. The design was modified with a flat surface, with the edges folded to give it strength. These signals featured a large washer on the central bolt on the arm. Finally, the washer was replaced with a standard bolt. All these three types are featured on the sheet.
The Southern also introduced a series of shorter (3 foot) arms for indicating loops and roads leading off the main line. A set of these corrugated arms is also provided.
These transfers also feature spectacle plates and lenses. This allows great flexibility for the modeller, as the arms only can be used (with the spectacle painted and glazed); arm and spectacle plate with the lenses cut out and glazed; or the complete transfer used. However it is unlikely that these can be illuminated from the rear, but are intended to greatly simplify construction.
The brass arm needs to primed white (there is show through), and then gloss varnished (this allows the transfer to grip the surface). The transfer is then softened with a drop of water, and when loose, teased onto the arm with a cocktail stick or similar.
Do check out photos and videos of the N scale layout ‘Bromsgrove’ which features working signals using these transfers.
