Description
The 9F was the last Standard Class steam locomotive to be designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways. The first entered traffic in 1954 and the last, No. 92220 Evening Star, was the final steam locomotive to be built by British Railways, emerging from Swindon in 1960. Although the 9F became regarded as one of the most successful locomotive classes ever built, many had appallingly short working lives with the first withdrawals occurring in 1964 as British Railways Modernisation plan paved the way for the wholesale withdrawal of steam traction. Thankfully, nine locomotives survive in preservation including No. 92214.No. 92214 was built at Swindon and was allocated to the Western Region when it entered traffic in October 1959. After less than six years in service, the locomotive was withdrawn in 1965. Rescued from Barry Scrapyard in 1980, the 9F was purchased by the Peak Railway Society and taken to their site in Buxton. From here it was purchased by the 92214 Locomotive Group who restored the loco at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley entering service once again in 2004. In 2010 No. 92214 was purchased by a private company and moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where lining was added to the BR black livery and the name Cock o the North was carried. A full overhaul was completed in 2013 and the following year it was sold to a Director of the Great Central Railway resulting in another move to a new home.Bachmann have always been keen supporters of railway preservation and with the GCR located a short distance from our Barwell offices, we have strong ties with the line. Following No. 92214s arrival on the GCR in 2014, the Bachmann Collectors Club proudly sponsored its repaint into lined Brunswick Green livery to coincide with the lines inaugural Model Event at which the 9F was one of the star attractions.After receiving its new livery, the opportunity was taken to name the loco Central Star, a nod to classmate Evening Star, and it also masqueraded as No. 92220 Evening Star during 2015. Following Leicester Citys remarkable Premier League winning season No. 92214 was named Leicester City in July 2016 and these nameplates are still carried today.Utilising the Bachmann Branchline 9F tooling, our model features etched smoke deflectors, a removable coal load with the coal space modelled beneath, detailed cab interior, accessory pack and is paired with a BR1G tender just like the real loco.Decorated in BR lined Brunswick Green livery, just as the real locomotive appeared following its repaint in 2014, etched nameplates for both Central Star and Leicester City are also included allowing you to choose the identity you like most!
