Twolines significantly shaped railroading history in WesternNorth Carolinaand in the Southeast.

The two railroads, the Clinchfieldand the SouthernRailway, have some of the most loyal followers in the country.

Inthe early 1900s, the South & Western, a predecessor of theClinchfield Railroad, advanced its lines toward Spartanburg, SouthCarolina. Several miles east of Marion, North Carolina, however, itstracks could go no farther. The tracks of the Southern Railway laybetween the railroad and its goal. The South & Western requestedpermission from Southern to construct a crossing but was refused. They then took Southern to court.Permission was given by thecourt for the South & Western to tunnel under the Southern, andwork soon began. Before tunneling, however, supports were placedunder the Southern’s tracks, thereby allowing the Southern’s trafficto continue unhindered. This crossing at Marion is known today asClinchcross. Addedto the textual histories are over 300 photographs and illustrations, including timetables and maps for most of the linesdiscussed.
