Wrenn W2228 ‘City of Birmingham’ (NO tender) unboxed working BUT needs attention
One of the many former Hornby Dublo models and moulds purchased by G & R Wrenn from Lines Bros in 1966, Wrenn went on to produce around 40 diferently numbered/liveried/powered versions of the LMS Duchess class loco over the next 25 years. Including this listed example, their principal version of the City of Birmingham, no.46235 in BR green, made within the period 1973-91.
This OO scale 2-rail loco is supplied unboxed and without a tender. Having cleaned the wheels and commutator, and lubed the motor spindle and worm gear, upon track testing, the loco ran sluggishly at full power on the controller and refused to move – soon beginning to smoke – at low power. Clearly the fault needs to be diagnosed and corrected before proper running will be possible. My only suggestion is that one of the brushes is so severely worn down that its holder is almost touching the commutator…. Cosmetically, one front buffer is missing (photo 6), the front bogie, which may not be original, has some corrosion (photo 11), whilst the loco has some small patches of paint loss (eg photo 12) and some wear to decals (eg photos 8 & 9). Otherwise, the overall condition is good for a c.40-year old used model.
