‘OO’ Gauge Carriage Lighting flicker-free circuit (DCC)
Item Features
This circuit board (PCB) is a project that I put together for myself for the purposes of lighting my collection of OO gauge Hornby and Bachmann coaches, but wanted a small PCB. I’m selling some of these at cost as I have bulk purchased components and the PCBs to bring the costs down to myself but now need to make that investment back.
Please keep in mind that this circuit is designed for DCC layouts, not DC/analogue.
What it consists of:
The item consists of a custom designed printed circuit board (PCB), a bridge rectifier, a 220 ohm resistor, a 1Kohm resistor and a 16v 1000uF electrolytic capaictor.
PCB details (for the PCB minded geeks out there):
– Dimensions: 2.6cm x 0.7cm
– Materials: RF4, LeadFree HASL-RoHS
– Copper Weight: 1
– Thickness: 1.6mm
– Layers: 2
How it works:
The track (AC) power is fed from the wheels to the two “Track Pwr” inputs at one end of the circuit (the polarity does not matter) and is converted to DC by the bridge rectifier. The resistors reduce the current slightly and output the power on the other end of the circuit to any attached LED strip (not included).
The circuit also has anti-flicker capability as the capacitor acts as an energy reservoir which will power the circuit if there is a momentary interruption of power – such as going over a dirty bit of track.
Note that the larger the capacitor (uF) the more it stores/lasts, but always ensure that rating of 16v or higher is used.
Notes:
Power/rail pickups and the LED strip are NOT included (see below).
The capacitor does not come soldered to the PCB as most people prefer to solder this to fly leads and then those to the PCB. This is due to the capacitor being large and so sometimes needing to be hidden in another compartment (such as one with an opaque “toilet” window).
The capacitor is polarised so please ensure that the negative leg is connected to the ground/negative (see the demonstration images).
Recommendations:
I use DCC Concepts Pickups & Springs (DCF-PS2.0) along with conductive paint to pick power up from the wheels.
** If you are not familiar with how to do this then I recommend looking up the process before purchasing. **
Also, I recommend self-adhesive 12V LED strips. You can normally purchase them in reels/lengths from ebay.
Finally, I’ve included a copy of the PCB circuit diagram as one of the pictures of the product.
