PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING Our card kits have gained ahigh reputation, and many repeat orders, which is a testimonial to oursatisfied customers, but we find that a few purchasers have not bothered toread the write up. a) The kits are printed oncard, and are not READY-TO-RUN plastic or metal models.b) Because the subjects wecover often have very limited sales, pre-cut card is NOT possible withoutincreasing the price to prohibitive levels. This means YOU have to cut out theparts, including any windows, doors etc. If you are looking for a SHAKE THEBOX AND IT FALLS TOGETHER KIT, then our kits are DEFINITELY NOT for you. Ifyou are prepared to do quite a lot of work, then you will end up with a modelthat has far more detail than the majority of the throw it together kits. c) We use quite thin 160gsmcard for our kits, and there are several reasons for this. Partly this is tokeep costs down, but there are more significant reasons. If you look at mostkits, the windows are recessed far more than they should be due to thethickness of the material, and beading or other overlays are also much tooprominent, so are either omitted by kit designers or are grossly over-scale.With the thin card we use, you can get it RIGHT, but it is more work for us todesign and for you to build. d) Anyone knows that you cantbend card in two planes, so domed roof ends are out on a kit. WRONG withthe thin card WE use, it will deform to permit domed panels. By using amulti-layering technique we can cover items that are quite impracticable inheavier card. We tried various thicknesses until we found what will work.Another benefit is that two or three layers of thin card, when glued togetherare MUCH STRONGER than one thicker piece of card and are less likely to sag ordeform. e) With thin card, we can add alot more detail. For example our Ramsey water tank kit depicts a wooden tankthat is very weathered with rotten wood. The colour artwork on all four facesis an exact match for the original, and with multi-layering you get 3D decayedwood in full colour. How many other kits do you know that offer that ???? TO SUMMARISE IF YOU EXPECT A KIT YOU CAN THROW TOGETHER IN FIVE MINUTES, THEN YOU WILL NOTLIKE OUR KITS. IF SO PLEASE DO NOT BUY. If, on the other hand, you are prepared totake some time, you can build a delightful model, and have a look at the photosof the kits in our range. The display model is built up from one of our kits, but you need to take time and put in some effort. Best wishes Robert &ElenaTHIS IS A CARD KIT THAT YOU NEED TO ASSEMBLE. 00 GaugeBabbedge & Hinckley Gas POW Wagon Card KitKitbuilds TWO wagons This Elro OO Gauge CARD kit produces static card models of two interesting and unusualPrivate owner coal wagons that ran in the Midlands from the early 1900s to thestart of the fifties. R J Babbedge & Son were coal merchants who set up inRugby in 1902, and at their peak, the firm operated seven POW coal wagons, which were painted dark grey with white lettering shaded black. Through thehelp of members of the Babbedge family, we have been able to create this kit ofthis little known fleet. Hinckley Urban District Council operated the town gasworks, and obtained coal in their own red painted POW coal wagons. Photos showthat at least one of the Hinckley and Babbedge wagons were very similar, andthere is reason to believe that both came from the works of Thomas Hunter ofRugby, one of the less well known wagon builders. This combination of two small and unusualfleets and a rare builder makes the kit especially welcome to modellers who aredepicting the first half of the twentieth century. Records suggest that thewagons travelled quite widely and almost certainly drew coal from theWarwickshire, Leicestershire, Derby, Notts, and even the South Yorkshirecoalfields Themodeller can complete the kit as a static display model, or can fit it withworking wheels, axleguards, buffers and couplings to operate on hislayout. The wagons in the photo are ourproving models, which we always build before releasing any kit. Apart fromconfirming the artwork, we want them for our own layout, which includes severe gradients and longtrains, so the kits have to be sufficiently robust to do so. The kit is designed so that you can build inthe strength that is needed without it being apparent. To complete the kit, youwill need scissors/craft knife, a steel ruler, glue, scrap card, and wheels, buffers couplings and axleguards if you require a working model,. as theseitems cannot be made from card. The use of Felt tip pens or paint to touch inexposed edges of the card will markedly improve your model. In this ageof plastic and resin, the use of card in a kit may seem old-fashioned, butcard is a very versatile and convenient modelling medium, and where smallproduction runs are called for, is ideal, as it offers versatility at low cost.To do a small production run for a structure like this in plastic or resinwould put up the cost 10 or 20 fold. The kit consists of seven sheets ofpre-printed fully coloured card, along with detailed instructions and a photoof a completed model for you to refer to during construction. THE CARD IS QUITETHIN, BUT THIS MEANS IT BENDS SMOOTHLY WHERE NECESSARY IN A WAY THAT THICK CARDWILL NOT DO. IT ALSO MEANS THAT EXCELLENT 3-D EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE WITH THEMULTIPLE LAYERS INCLUDED IN THE KIT. IT IS MORE WORK TO DESIGN AND BUILD USINGMULTIPLE LAYERS, BUT THEFINISHED MODEL IS BETTER AND STRONGER .HOWEVER, WE DORECOMMEND WITH ALL OUR KITS THAT STRUCTURAL AREAS SHOULD BE REINFORCED WITHADDITIONAL SCRAP CARD THAT IS CHEAPLY AVAILABLE FROM STATIONERS OR YOU CAN USECORNFLAKE PACKETS ETC IF YOU ARE KEEN ON RECYCLING. Additional card isparticularly important in this case if you wish to run it on a layout as awagon that falls apart on its first trip is not much use. I learnt that lessonas a teenager when a wagon I had just built did disintegrate on its first trip!!! The kitincludes sides, ends, floors, roof, and chassis, and these act as patternswhere you need to add reinforcing card, making construction much less effortthan with scratch building. However, we would emphasise that this is NOT ashake the box and it falls together kit. Whilst the kit can be built up witha high level of detail with the strapping correctly riveted, it can also beassembled as a simple box by a younger or less experienced modeller. Unlikeexpensive etched brass kits that many modellers believe are too daunting totackle and are very costly, this card kit is readily affordable and is a goodstart to modelling. If it is your first card kit, then it probably wont look asgood as the model in the photo. That is no reflection on your skills, butreflects on my own first efforts which were not that good, but the beauty of acard kit is that if you do mess it up, it is not mega bucks down the drain. Theend result depends on the effort you put in. OO Gauge Garstang& Knott End Rly Salt Wagon Card Kit This Elro OOGauge CARD kit assembles into a detailed model of a Garstang &Knott End Railway salt van. The Garstang& Knott End Railway was authorised in 1864 to build an 11.5 mile branchfrom the LNWR main line at Garstang & Catterall station on the West CoastMain Line just north of Preston to Knott End which is on the mouth of the RWyre, opposite Fleetwood, to which it is connected by a pedestrian ferry. Theline was not completed throughout until 1908, and was absorbed into the LMS in1923. Passenger services ceased in 1930 and freight services in the 1960s. Asan independent line until 1923, it is an attractive prototype for the modeller, but the destruction of company records in the Derby Works fire in 1951 meansthat data is sparse. The United AlkaliCos salt works near Preesall contributed a lot of business to the line from1908 until the 1930s. The G&KER,which was always hard up, rebuilt some ancient open wagons as ark roofed saltwagons, their short 7 foot wheelbase and design attesting to their antiquity. This kit builds up into TWO of these unusual vehicles, Nos 10 and 15. It isthought that they were scrapped shortly after the Grouping. IF the response to this kit is sufficient, wehope to produce kits of other G&KER stock, and if anyone has photos, drawings etc, we would be delighted to hear from them. The modeller can complete the kit as a static display model, orcan fit it with working wheels, axleguards, buffers and couplings to operate onhis layout. The wagon in the photo isthe proving model, which we always build before releasing any kit and iscompleted to run on our layout which includes severe gradients and long trains,so has to be sufficiently robust to do so. The kit is designed so that you can build in the strength that is neededwithout it being apparent. As old vanbodies were sometimes grounded for use as hen houses, store buildings, etc,and no one knows exactly what happened to the Knott End stock after 1923, itcould form the basis of a lineside accessory for a layout set in more recenttimes, giving it a wide appeal. The photo of the PROVING MODEL for our kitshows that instead of the common 9 inch corner plates, that narrow angle ironis used to frame the bosywork, and this adds appeal to this unusual vehicle. Tocomplete the kit, you will need scissors/craft knife, a steel ruler, glue, lotsof scrap card, glazing material, and guttering and drain pipes,. as these itemscannot be made from card. The use of Felt tip pens or paint to touch in exposededges of the card will markedly improve your model. IT ALSO MEANS THAT EXCELLENT3-D EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE WITH THE MULTIPLE LAYERS INCLUDED IN THE KIT.
